If I were you I’d google “Free soundfont player” and pick your options wisely. I use FruityLoops Studio (and paid for the Fruity Soundfont Player) but iirc there are a few free programs that let you load and play around with soundfonts.
Think of it like the music program is your studio, and the Soundfont player is your instrument (like an electric piano) and the actual soundfont files are different sounds you can load onto your electric piano. It actually goes deeper than that, as within those programs you need a soundfont player to run those files.
